Dr. R. Duncan Johnson is a board-certified ophthalmologist who joined Inland Eye Specialists in 2012. He treats medical and surgical diseases of the eye, specializing in cornea, cataract, and LASIK/Refractive surgery. As director of our LASER Refractive Surgery Center, Dr. Johnson offers his patients the most advanced techniques in LASIK surgery including the latest generation WaveLight laser with an “all-laser” Intralase and customized Contoura treatments. In addition to these advanced LASIK procedures, he offers a diverse range of vision-enhancing options such as Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) and Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) surgery, ensuring patients have access to a comprehensive array of refractive solutions. Dr. Johnson also performs a variety of corneal procedures including full-thickness and partial thickness corneal transplants, pterygium surgery, removal of ocular surface cancers and subsequent ocular surface reconstruction.
Dr. Johnson completed his medical degree at The Ohio State University: College of Medicine and received his Ophthalmology training at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA. He then successfully fulfilled a fellowship in Cornea and Refractive Surgery at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA.
Dr. Johnson is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the International Society of Refractive Surgery. He has received numerous awards and honors for his research and has made multiple scientific presentations. He has also published extensively in many peer-reviewed journals including Ophthalmology, Cornea, and The Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. He has also authored various book chapters on subjects such as pterygium surgery, cataract surgery and lens calculations after refractive surgery. Dr. Johnson is a Principal Investigator in multiple clinical trials evaluating a variety of corneal conditions and helping to develop new and improved treatments for the future.
Dr. Johnson is also an active educator. He has traveled internationally to perform surgery and train physicians in specialized corneal procedures. After his training, Dr. Johnson remained on staff at UCLA as an associate clinical and surgical instructor of Ophthalmology, traveling up to UCLA regularly to train residents in modern surgical techniques for many years. He currently trains and educates residents from the Southwest Healthcare Family Medicine Residency program, as well as UCSD Ophthalmology residents during their local Transitional Year internship program.
Dr. Johnson, a native of Southwest Riverside County, is married and has four children. He speaks Japanese, as well as some medical Spanish. He is an avid cyclist and loves to travel and explore all the beautiful sights our world has to offer.
